Menopause and perimenopause journeys touch everything – pain, sleep, mood, sex, identity and work.

Clinical trials and major menopause organisations now recognise hypnosis as a research-supported, non-hormonal option for hot flushes and night sweats. Safe Space offers evidence-informed clinical hypnotherapy in Newcastle as supportive care for some of these experiences, alongside appropriate medical care where needed.

Menopause is more than a list of symptoms

Menopause can also arrive during a period of considerable change — relationships, family responsibilities, work, ageing, body image, sexuality or questions about identity and what comes next.

Sometimes the difficulty isn't one particular symptom from list below. It is the cumulative experience of feeling different in a body and life that no longer seem quite as predictable.

  • Hot flushes, night sweats or sudden heat surges

  • Broken sleep or difficulty settling again after waking

  • Anxiety or feeling unable to switch off

  • Irritability or feeling more emotionally reactive

  • Fatigue or daytime fog

  • Changes in confidence or body image

  • Simply feeling “not quite like myself”

How hypnosis helps with menopause symptoms ?

1. Reducing hot flushes & night sweats

The 2025 trial involved 250 postmenopausal women. Hot-flash scores decreased 53.4% in the hypnosis group versus 40.9% in the active-control group at six weeks.

The Australasian Menopause Society also states that hypnosis has been shown to reduce vasomotor-symptom severity and frequency.

2. Anxiety & Emotional Overwhelm

Some women notice more anxiety, emotional sensitivity or difficulty settling their thoughts during the menopause transition.

Large reviews show that clinical hypnosis may help some women work with anxiety and emotional responses that can feel automatic or difficult to change consciously. Research in this area is encouraging.³

3. Sleep & Switching Off

Night sweats can wake you — but sometimes the difficulty is getting settled again and what should have been a brief waking turns into another broken night.

Hypnosis has also shown encouraging results for sleep in women experiencing menopausal symptoms, although the evidence is less extensive than it is for hot flushes.²

4. Supporting you through treatment decisions

We don’t replace your doctors – Clinical hypnosis does not balance hormones or treat the underlying hormonal changes of menopause.

Some women use menopausal hormone therapy (MHT/HRT). Others cannot use it, choose not to, or are looking for additional support alongside their medical care.

What Might Change for You?

“The researchers found that clinical hypnosis interventions consistently demonstrated clinically significant efficacy in reducing (upto 70%) hot flash frequency and severity, as well as improving quality of life, sleep quality, and mood.”

What does the research say about Menopause, Perimenopause?

  • Clinical hypnosis resulted in significant reductions in self-reported and physiologically measured hot flashes as well as hot flash scores in post-menopausal women.

  • Five weekly sessions of hypnosis reduced hot flushes by 80%.

  • One approach which is recommended by the North American Menopause Society for the management of menopause symptoms is hypnotherapy.

    1. Elkins et al., 2025 — JAMA Network Open
250-person RCT of self-administered clinical hypnosis for hot flashes; hypnosis produced significantly greater reduction in hot-flash scores than active sham.

    2. Carmona et al., 2024 — systematic review
Encouraging sleep effects from clinical hypnosis and CBT in women with significant vasomotor symptoms; further research still needed.

    3. Roberts et al., 2021 — RCT secondary analysis
Provides initial evidence for anxiety reduction in postmenopausal women receiving hypnosis.

    4. The Menopause Society, 2023 Position Statement
Clinical hypnosis listed as a recommended nonhormone intervention for vasomotor symptoms, Level I evidence.

    5. Australasian Menopause Society — Non-Hormonal Treatments for Menopausal Symptoms
Australian professional source recognising evidence around vasomotor symptoms, anxiety and sleep.
